Do I Need Total Shoulder Replacement?

Total shoulder replacement, also known as total shoulder arthroplasty, is a procedure in which damaged portions of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components in order to reduce pain and restore range of motion. During a shoulder replacement, patients will require one of two options: replacement of the head of the humerus bone (ball), or replacement of both the head of the humerus bone as well as the glenoid (ball and socket).

There are several conditions that can cause severe shoulder pain and loss of mobility that typically lead patients to consider shoulder replacement surgery, including osteoarthritis (“age-related wear and tear”), rheumatoid arthritis (“inflammatory arthritis”), severe trauma or injury (fractures), and failed previous shoulder replacement surgery.

Although shoulder replacement surgery is less common than knee or hip replacements, it’s a highly successful treatment for those suffering from severe pain and stiffness caused by injury or end-stage arthritis. However, patients should only undergo shoulder replacement after more conservative treatment options have failed to provide relief and restore the use of the shoulder.
