Do I Need Total Knee Replacement?

Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a procedure that is commonly performed to remove and replace a joint that has been damaged due to arthritis or trauma with an artificial joint to provide pain relief and restore range of motion.

Many knee replacement surgeries are performed in order to treat severe osteoarthritis, however, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic injury to the knee may also result in the need for replacement, but only after more conservative treatment options have failed to provide relief and restore the use of the knee.

Knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful orthopedic joint replacement procedures performed in the U.S. each year and is the most common type of joint replacement performed at Texas Ortho Center.

Am I a Candidate for Total Knee Replacement?

If you’re suffering from debilitating knee pain due to a chronic condition or injury and other more conservative treatments have failed to provide relief, it may be time for a knee replacement.

You may need knee replacement surgery if:

  • You’re experiencing extreme stiffness and swelling
  • You’re experiencing constant pain, even while resting
  • It’s difficult and painful to stand up, walk or climb stairs
  • Medication and therapy have failed to provide relief

If you choose to have knee replacement surgery, your options may include either partial or total replacement depending on your unique condition. To find out if you’re a candidate contact our Patient Advocates.
